books can talk about the future but music lags
Music has a quicker response time than books and films.
The time it takes to write a song may just be 3 minutes.
But the time it takes to make a film or a book? Not sure which one takes longer. I guess theoretically films take longer because the script is written first and then it has to be filmed. It involves more people. But they shoot these things in 7 days nowadays. I just wonder how long it takes to write a script…
But books seem to be the most “ahead of the beat” somehow
Music seems to reflect what is going on after it has already happened. There are songs now about feminism messages from like 50 years ago. Music has a lag.
Films are rather current. They’re on the beat. They talk about exactly what’s happening.
But books project into the future. What Andri Snær Magnason said in 2002 is still in the process of coming true. He could’ve said it today and it would be considered a great movie talking about the approximate future.
And I wonder why that is. Why books are so ahead.
When it takes no time at all to make music.
I think it’s because…music is more about emotions but books are more about ideas
The visceral feeling of music is an emotional resonance thing and you can only resonate with things you’ve already felt.
But you can imagine into the future with your mind and so…that’s what books do well
Films are somewhere in between. The very property of a film contains lines and pictures and music.
The other thing is that films are often from books and the soundtrack is added after that
They’re making a weetzie bat movie/show and I honestly hope it fails.
I hope it never comes out the way that “the mediator” series never came out
It would ruin the books
It would taint the books with the images from the movie/show and would remove the poetry from the words and pace
There is no way to do in film what can be done in books…
You can only depict plot in films.
Plot books are good film material but the best books, and weetzie is a best book, is not about plot
(Though…” the mediator “ would’ve been a cool show…)
