life in koufonisia
Yesterday we went to the beach and I saw two crows sitting on two adjacent trees, they looked like chickens sitting on eggs, all snuggly and tucked in. The wind blew and their tail feathers sometimes got caught up in it, but they made their little bodies as compact as possible, like when cats turn their bodies into little stationary cars.
Seb went into the water to snorkel and I read Jules Verne on the beach. Sometimes the wind blew sand around me and onto my kindle and I closed my eyes to protect myself and felt the sand grazing my cheeks. I tried not to breathe too much. I wiped the sand off my kindle and hoped that not too much got in the charging hole. I blew on it to try to get it out. It looked ok. That’s one of the bad things about kindles I suppose. One of the only bad things besides that you can’t show off what you’re reading to everyone. But the good is that you learn so many more words this way. You never have to guess words because you can just click on them and have dictionary definitions. I quite enjoy that
Then we got back and had dinner with Luca Sarah and their friends Luca and Sophie at that restaurant we always go to, ca chica or something. The waitress, who looks like that Uma Thurman character from Pulp Fiction, with her black bob and red lips and tattoos, said to us “oh you brought your friends” — she knows us!
I had fish and chips with lime thyme mayonnaise. That mayonnaise was a revelation. I would’ve still preferred malt though. It’s not fancy but it’s just the best
We ended up going to that bar where I had the huge fight with Seb but luckily nobody noticed me.
Their friends were either shy or self-centered but they kinda just sat and waited for the conversation to be brought to them. I inquired about what they’ve been reading (because they traveled 3 days to get here) and they said gesund genug & game of thrones
I’ve read neither so I can’t say but
I have something against game of thrones
And gesund genug sounds like a very typical attempt at a book
Idk though. Maybe it’s a hidden gem
I find German books often shallow
Das parfum was about nothing.
And that book I was so excited about by Michael ende which was supposed to be a satire about the state of the world was really more of a typical children’s adventure cartoon with some mentions of the ways of the world but does not say anything deep about it
But I find that Michael ende knows how to write characters that are alive and believable. And he can make them entirely different from each other with different voices. It’s a fun book still but just didn’t do all the deep things I expected it to do
Anyway I find that I live more when I’m here. I do more. My memories consist of something. When we sail frequently my memory is sparse because many hours are spent in the cockpit. Reading, though. I read a lot when we sail.
