what’s the difference between a literary magazine and a book review blog?
It’s very simple.
Literary magazines have columns.
Do I have columns? I do not.
I love columns. Columns are extremely fun to read.
What would my column be?
I feel like a story journalist in the sense that…you know how journalists are always looking for the big scoop the big story? The story that will matter and that will maybe not matter but at least get people really riled up?
I am like that but with actual stories (books mostly but sometimes movies; I am with movies the way people are with milk. I go get more when I run out. But I am with books the way people are with toilet paper. I stock up at all times. Always on the market for toilet paper). I’m looking through the conceits and premises and synopses and trying to see if there’s a story there (I like stories that are not really about the actual plot. To me a good scoop is great world building or a world philosophy or a fun intelligent voice or a unique style or …yeah things like that)
I feel I can tell if it’s just going to be another same old same old nothing new
Or if we’ve really got something on our hands.
The way in which I’m opposite of a journalist is that I’m not looking for pain. I’m looking for the kind of medicines that taste like candy. Like a delicious antacid or a gummy vitamin.
